FAQ

What makes your school a Christian academy?

Thrive Online Academy is built on a Christ-centered foundation. Scripture and a biblical worldview are woven into our curriculum, instruction, and school culture. Students participate in monthly online chapel services, receive prayer and encouragement from their teachers, and learn in an environment that emphasizes character, faith, and spiritual growth. Everything we do is designed to help students grow academically and spiritually.

How does online learning work for students?

We combine Ignitia’s Christian digital curriculum with one-on-one live teacher support. Students complete most assignments independently throughout the week, while teachers meet with them live depending on their support package (guided, advanced, or elite). Teachers track progress, answer questions, and help students stay on track. Parents receive regular updates, but weekly involvement depends on the support plan chosen. Our K-2 students will receive physical books through Lifepac that will allow them to complete their work.

What grade levels do you offer?

We currently offer K–12 instruction using print materials for younger grades and digital courses for older students. K-2 elementary students use physical books that are mailed to the family’s home, while 3rd-12th grade students use Ignitia, which is exclusively online. Students are also able to be signed up for electives as well through the ignitia portal.

What curriculum do you use?

Our lower elementary students use the Lifepac curriculum to better engage students with more hands-on learning during their foundational years. Our upper elementary through high school students use the Ignitia curriculum, a Christian curriculum aligned with national and international standards. Core subjects include Bible, Math, Language Arts, Science, and History. Our high school students can choose a basic or college prep track for their course load. Students also have access to group classes through our clubs and chapel. Assessments include quizzes, tests, papers, and projects—with two attempts available for a focus on mastery. Students with IEPs or learning needs may receive adaptive pacing, modified expectations, and personalized support.

How much parent involvement is required?

Parent involvement varies depending on the support package.

  • Minimum package: families handle most daily supervision, while our admin team grades assignments.
  • Guided package: families get two live check-ins per week, but students work mostly independently.
  • Advanced and Elite Support: require very little parent oversight since teachers guide learning, monitor pacing, and keep students on track.

Parents always receive communication, updates, and support so they feel well supported in the process.

What does a typical school day look like?

A school day depends on the child’s age and the support level selected. Most students complete 2-3 hours of coursework per day through their digital platform. Live sessions take place throughout the week based on the support plan, and teachers adjust pacing to meet the child’s learning needs. Some homework may be assigned if not all the assignments are completed with their teacher. Students work from home on a flexible schedule while still staying on track with coursework and teacher expectations. We scheduled our lessons around a four-day school schedule so that families have more time together and families can provide in-person learning through field trips and library visits on Fridays. Each family can choose a time for their 1-on-1 instruction that fits within their child’s most focused learning time each day.

How do students interact socially in an online Christian school?

Students connect through monthly online chapel, weekly interest-based clubs, and regular personalized instruction from teachers. Teachers build strong one-on-one relationships with students during live sessions. Even though we are virtual, community and relationship building is an important part of who we are.

How do I enroll my child?

Enrollment is simple. Families begin by filling out an application and paying the $150 application fee. Then, our team schedules a meeting with your family so we can learn about your child and recommend the best support plan. From there, you’ll complete the enrollment forms, pay the enrollment fee of $500, and submit required documents (previous records, birth certificate, and any IEP/504 paperwork if applicable). Once processed, your student is able to sign up for their preferred time slot with their teacher and they can sign up for clubs. Students will begin working with their teacher in August when the school year starts. If the child is being enrolled through the year, they can get caught up or just complete the second half of the year if they are joining in January.

What are the tuition and payment options?

We offer multiple support levels with flexible payment options. Tuition can be paid quarterly or in full at a discounted rate of 25% off. All families are required to pay the $150 application fee and $500 enrollment fee. Many states offer ESA or scholarship programs, and our academy accepts funding from a growing list of programs. Please visit our Fees & Tuition page for details on plans, due dates, and refund policies. We also accept ESA funds in a variety of states, so check out our Financial Aid page to see if your state provides state funding. We also offer a 10% discount to any missionary families!

Do you offer support for students with learning differences (IEPs/504s)?

Yes. We provide accommodations and personalized teacher support for students with learning differences. Our one-on-one live sessions allow teachers to adjust pacing, break down concepts, and offer additional scaffolding. We also assist families in understanding how an online environment can support their child’s learning needs. We have individuals on our team who are equipped to provide support to students with learning disabilities. We also do placement tests so we can determine what their ability level is and work on helping them get caught up through personalized support and placing them at different grade levels for each subject.

Can my child join part way through the year?

Yes! We enroll students throughout the school year. We recognize that students don’t always succeed in the educational plan you chose, so we want to be available to you at any point in the year. We will charge for the quarter that you are enrolling your child into and the future quarters, so you don’t need to pay for the full year. Our teacher’s availability will be more restricted later in the year, so you might need to be flexible in the timing of your 1-on-1 instruction.

How many hours will it take my child to get through their classwork?

Kindergarten students will take between 4-6 hours per week, 1st and 2nd grade students will take between 4-10 hours per week, 3rd-8th grade students will take between 6-15 hours per week, and 9th-12th grade students will take between 10-18 hours per week. There is a large range because some students pick up on concepts very quickly and move through the curriculum, and others need more time to work through problems. The majority of students will take the lower range of hours, but it really depends on the child.

Do you have to live in the United States to enroll your child?

No, we serve families all around the world! We are a Christian school that serves families overseas as missionaries, military families, and international families looking for an online Christian school with native English-speaking teachers. Our live teaching instruction happens between 7 am and 4 pm Central time, so you need to make sure that your time zone allows you to be able to join a live call within that time frame. We just ask that if you are based in a different country, you make sure your internet is strong enough to receive the live instruction.

Policies

Policies to support a smooth educational experience for families and students

Below you’ll find our core school policies written with families in mind. We keep everything simple, transparent, and supportive so you always know what to expect.

1. Privacy Policy — How We Handle Student Data
  • We take student privacy seriously. Any information you share with Thrive Online Academy—during enrollment, placement, or throughout the school year—is used only to support your child’s learning.
  • We collect basic information such as:
    1. Student and parent names
    2. Contact information
    3. Placement results and progress data
    4. Assignments, assessments, and teacher notes
  • This information allows us to place students correctly, monitor growth, and communicate clearly with families.
  • We do not sell or share personal information with outside companies.
  • We only share data with trusted educational platforms we use for instruction (such as Tutorbird, Canva, and Ignitia), and only for learning purposes.
  • Parents may request access to their child’s records or ask questions about data handling at any time by contacting our administrative team.
2. Terms & Conditions
  • When you enroll at Thrive Online Academy, you agree to a few basic expectations that help us provide a smooth, supportive experience for all students and families:
  • Enrollment & Fees
    1. A $150 application fee starts the enrollment process and is non-refundable.
    2. A $500 enrollment fee secures your child’s placement and teacher time slot, and it is also non-refundable.
    3. Tuition is billed according to the support level your family selects (self-paced, 2/4/6 hours of live instruction).
    4. Payments must remain current for students to access courses and live sessions.
  • Scheduling & Attendance
    1. For students receiving live instruction:
      • Families commit to attending scheduled sessions on time.
      • Absences should be communicated in advance when possible.
      • Repeated no-shows may affect scheduling or progress.
    2. For self-paced students:
      • Parents help ensure assignments are completed by weekly due dates.
      • Our admin team may request check-ins if progress slows.
3. Refund policy for tuition and fees
  • At Thrive Online Academy, we understand that circumstances may change. Our refund policy ensures clarity and fairness for families.
  • Cancellation and Refunds:
    • Within 14 days of course start: Full refund of tuition, minus application and enrollment fees.
    • No refund will be given after the 14-day window, but withdrawal can be given for the next quarter according to the designated due dates.
    • If a family chooses to withdraw their child, they will need to give written notice two weeks prior to the end of each quarter as outlined below:
      1. Unenrolling for quarter 1 due date – September 14th
      2. Unenrolling for quarter 2 due date – October 19th
      3. Unenrolling for quarter 3 due date – January 4th
      4. Unenrolling for quarter 4 due date – March 15th
  • All refund requests must be submitted in writing to our administrative team at hello@thriveonlineacademy.org
  • Withdrawals processed after 10 days may result in a “W” (withdrawn) notation on the student’s record.
  • Application and enrollment fees are non-refundable.
  • This policy applies to all tuition payments, ensuring families understand their financial commitments while allowing flexibility for unforeseen circumstances.

4. Non-discrimination policy
  • Thrive Online Academy welcomes every family who desires a high-quality, Christian-centered education for their child. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, age, or family status in any part of our program—including enrollment, instruction, staffing, or student activities.
  • As our school teaches from a Christian worldview, we are committed to treating each student with dignity and care. Families who respect our values and expectations are warmly invited to learn and grow with us.
5. Code of conduct
  • Because Thrive Online Academy is built on meaningful connection and Christian character, we ask all students to uphold a standard of behavior that keeps our community safe, respectful, and encouraging.
  • Students are expected to:
    1. Be kind in words and actions
    2. Listen to teachers and follow directions
    3. Participate during live sessions and stay engaged
    4. Use technology responsibly
    5. Treat classmates and adults with patience and respect
    6. Show integrity in their work and communication
  • If concerns arise, we partner with parents quickly and work together to support the student. Repeated or serious behavior issues may lead to adjustments made to live instruction or removal from school, but our goal is always restoration and growth first.
6. Academic integrity
  • At Thrive Online Academy, students grow best when their work reflects their own understanding and effort. Because we are an online program, we speak plainly about what academic honesty looks like—and what can quietly undermine a child’s progress.
  • Students are expected to complete their assignments independently unless their teacher gives specific directions to involve other individuals in their work.
    • Academic integrity includes:
      • Completing work on their own—not having a parent, sibling, or another adult do the assignment for them
      • Using AI responsibly—AI tools may be used to study or brainstorm only when a teacher approves, but AI may not write or rewrite assignments
      • Not copying from websites, videos, textbooks, or other students
      • Not using answer keys or online solutions unless the teacher provides them for practice
      • Asking for help when they don’t understand a concept instead of trying to “fix” an assignment with shortcuts
  • Parents are encouraged to support their child by providing clarity, encouragement, and accountability—but not by completing, editing, or correcting the child’s work beyond what the teacher allows. When too much help is given, it creates gaps we eventually have to correct, and it keeps the teacher from knowing how to support the student.
  • If a concern arises, we address it with grace and clarity by:
    • Talking with the student and the parent to understand what happened
    • Re-teaching expectations
    • Having the student redo the assignment honestly
    • Putting supports in place if needed
  • Repeated or serious violations may affect assignment credit or lead to additional intervention, but our posture is always to help students learn, grow, and take ownership of their work.
7. Parent partnership and expectations
  • Thrive Online Academy is built on a strong partnership between families and teachers. Because we provide personalized instruction in an online setting, parents play an important role in helping their child stay organized, supported, and ready to learn—without taking over the learning itself.
  • To help students grow with confidence and honesty, we ask parents to partner with us in the following ways:
    • Support their learner
      • Parents may:
        1. Encourage their child
        2. Help set routines
        3. Provide reminders and structure
        4. Clarify directions when needed
      • But parents should not:
        1. Complete assignments for their child
        2. Edit or rewrite student work
        3. Feed answers during assessments or live sessions
        4. Use AI tools to produce or improve student assignments
      • A student’s true progress matters more than a perfect worksheet. Honest work—whatever it looks like—is what helps us teach effectively.
    • Create a Safe and Focused Learning Space
      • Parents are responsible for:
        1. Make sure students attend their live classes with their teacher.
        2. Providing a quiet workspace
        3. Ensuring the student has safe device access
        4. Monitoring technology use during school hours
        5. Helping troubleshoot basic device or internet issues
        6. This keeps learning smooth and helps teachers maintain a healthy online environment.
    • Communicate Promptly
      • If something isn’t working—academically, emotionally, or logistically—please reach out. Teachers appreciate early communication when:
        1. A student is struggling
        2. A concept isn’t clicking
        3. Health or family circumstances affect schoolwork
        4. Technology issues interrupt learning
      • We’re here to help, and we respond quickly.
    • Trust the Learning Process
      • Growth takes time. We ask parents to:
        1. Allow students to make mistakes
        2. Encourage them to speak up for themselves
        3. Let us see their real understanding so we can support them well
      • Our goal is not just strong grades—it’s strong habits, independence, and character.
    • Honor Our Shared Values
      • Thrive Online Academy is a Christian community. We ask parents to model:
        1. Respectful communication
        2. Honesty
        3. Patience
        4. Grace-filled problem solving
      • These values shape the culture our students experience every day.
8. Technology and device usage
  • Thrive Online Academy operates fully online, so students need a reliable setup to participate in live sessions, complete assignments, and stay connected with their teacher. We’ve kept our requirements simple, but clear, so families know exactly what to expect.
  • Required Devices
    • To ensure your child can access all coursework and live lessons, families must provide:
      • A Laptop or Desktop Computer
        1. This should be the primary device for school.
        2. Chromebooks, Windows laptops, and MacBooks all work well.
        3. Devices should be no more than 3–5 years old for best performance
        4. Tablets may be used for some assignments, but not for full participation
        5. Do not use a smartphone as a primary device—many apps and features will not function correctly
      • Reliable Internet Access
        • A broadband internet connection (wired or Wi-Fi) is required.
        • For smooth video calls, we recommend:
          1. At least 2–3 Mbps upload and download for one-on-one sessions
          2. Higher bandwidth if multiple people are online in your household
          3. Students should join sessions in a spot with strong Wi-Fi. If a home router struggles, a Wi-Fi booster can help.
      • A Working Webcam
        • Built-in or external—either is fine.
        • Cameras help teachers connect, monitor engagement, and provide direct support.
      • A Headset or Earbuds With Microphone (optional but recommended)
        • This reduces background noise and helps students stay focused.
        • USB or wired headsets tend to be the most reliable for online learning.
      • Supported Operating Systems
        • Thrive lessons work well on:
          1. Windows 10 or newer, macOS X (10.10 or later), Chromebooks
          2. Older operating systems may not support our instructional platforms.
      • Browser Requirements
        • We strongly recommend: Google Chrome (best performance across platforms)
        • Students will also need a Gmail account (or a parent’s Gmail account for younger children) to access:
          1. Google Meet
          2. Google Classroom
          3. Google Chat
          4. Google Drive
      • Appropriate Use Expectations
        • To maintain a safe and productive learning environment, students should:
          1. Use their device for schoolwork only during class time
          2. Keep login information private
          3. Stay off unrelated websites, videos, and messaging apps during lessons
          4. Keep cameras and microphones on as directed by the teacher
          5. Follow their teacher’s instructions when sharing screens, joining calls, or using online tools
        • Parents should ensure students have:
          1. A quiet, distraction-free workspace
          2. A supervised environment, especially for younger grades
          3. Help troubleshooting basic tech issues (internet resets, sound/video setup, password access, etc.)
          4. Backup Devices
          5. Smartphones and tablets may be used as temporary backups, but not as a full replacement for a computer.
          6. Some features (screen sharing, certain curriculum tools, testing platforms) do not work correctly on mobile devices.
9. Complaint/appeals process for families
  • If a family has a problem with their course or with their teacher, they can reach out to hello@thriveonlineacademy.org and we will work with you to resolve the issue.
10. Handbook
  • Download the handbook here.
11. Assessment and grading policies
  • 90% of assignments are graded automatically with immediate scores provided but 10% will be graded by our admin team or their teacher. Students will be given a zero on an assignment if they plagiarize.
  • Grading Scale
    GradePercentageGPA Value
    A90-1004.0
    B80-893.0
    C70-793.0
    D60-691.0
    F0-590.0
  • Academic integrity is required in all assignments and assessments.
12. Statement of faith
  • At Thrive Online Academy, we believe that the Word of God is the center of our faith so we teach through a Christian worldview. We use these truths to guide our instruction as we provide a quality Christian education to students.
    1. The Bible – We believe that the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God, without error, and the ultimate authority for faith and life.
      (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
    2. God – We believe in one true God who exists eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
      (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 14:16-17)
    3. Jesus Christ – We believe that Jesus is both fully God and fully man, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died for our sins, rose again, and will return in glory.
      (John 1:1-3; Philippians 2:5-11; Acts 1:11)
    4. The Holy Spirit – We believe the Holy Spirit indwells believers, empowering them for godly living and service.
      (John 14:26; Galatians 5:22-23; Romans 8:9-11)
    5. Creation – We believe that God created all things for His glory, and humanity in His image to reflect His nature.
      (Genesis 1:27, 31; Colossians 1:16-17)
    6. Sin and Salvation – We believe all people are born into sin and can be saved only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
      (Romans 3:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16)
    7. The Church – We believe the church is the body of Christ, made up of all believers united to serve, worship, and share the gospel.
      (Ephesians 4:4-6; Acts 2:42-47)
    8. Christian Living – We believe believers are called to live holy and loving lives as a reflection of God’s transforming power.
      (Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:1-2)
    9. Marriage and Family – We believe God designed marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman and established family as the foundation of society.
      (Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:25-33)
    10. Human Life – We believe every human life is sacred, created in God’s image, and worthy of protection and care.
      (Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5)
13. Special accommodations
  • We have a team of teachers who are experienced working with students with special needs. We can adapt the instruction and provide the amount of support that a family needs. If the family has an IEP, our teachers can work to meet their goals. Our curriculum is set up in a way that students can be placed in the grade level that their placement test shows their ability level, so it is adaptive to the level that the students need to be. We make a personalized plan for our students with special needs because we believe every child has the ability to learn and thrive!
14. Student expectations
  • Students are expected to complete their own work with honesty and diligence. Plagiarism, cheating, or misuse of AI tools is strictly prohibited unless the teacher instructs students to utilize AI tools. Assignments found to be copied or generated dishonestly will receive a zero and may result in disciplinary action.
15. Attendance expectations
  • If a student is doing our independent track, they are expected to complete all of their work by the listed deadlines. Students utilizing the live instruction component are required to attend each of their live instruction sessions unless they are sick and then they will need to make up the time with their teacher. If a child signs up for a club and chapel, we encourage them to be consistent, but it is not required. If the child decides not to continue in a club, they need to notify their teacher so that the slot can be opened up to a new student. The time students spend on the assignments are tracked online, and progress reports are accessible for parents through their parent portal to track progress.
